The BPKI single-phase dry-type vacuum on-load tap changer is designed so that, when a transformer fault occurs, the arc-suppression coil in the transformer's grounding system—under the influence of the neutral-point voltage—adjusts its number of turns via the tap changer to select an appropriate reactance value, thereby compensating for the ground current. This reduces the current at the grounding point to a very small level or nearly zero, effectively extinguishing the arc at the grounding location.
