Energy Transition: What Role Will Energy Storage Play?
As China’s "dual carbon" goals move into a deeper implementation phase, installed capacity of wind power, photovoltaics and other new energy sources continues to rise. At the same time, their inherent intermittency is placing growing pressure on power grids. Energy storage, as both a "stabilizer" and "buffer" for building new power systems, is rapidly moving from a supporting role to becoming a core engine of the energy transition. From 3–5 December 2026, the 33rd China International Exhibition on Electric Power Equipment and Technology, also known as EP Shanghai 2026, will celebrate its 40th anniversary at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. Organized by the China Electricity Council, the exhibition will focus on "Building New Power Systems and Empowering the Global Energy Transition." This year’s show will feature a dedicated New Energy Storage Zone, bringing together players from across the entire industry chain to explore the coordinated development of source-grid-load-storage systems and inject new momentum into the global energy transition. ![]() Three Reasons to Attend EP Shanghai • Expanded Scale: Targeting the Core Energy Storage Market EP Shanghai 2026 will be comprehensively upgraded, covering 86,000 square meters of exhibition space. The show will integrate its traditional strengths in one-stop power transmission and distribution, energy digitalization, and power automation with emerging growth areas such as new energy storage and hydrogen-power integration. At the New Energy Storage Zone, visitors will be able to explore: • A full spectrum of storage technologies From electrochemical storage such as lithium-ion batteries and flow batteries, to physical storage technologies including flywheel energy storage and compressed air energy storage, the zone will present diverse technology pathways. • Core equipment and system solutions Exhibits will include power conversion systems (PCS), battery management systems (BMS), energy management systems (EMS), thermal management and fire safety systems, as well as full-scenario storage solutions for the generation side, grid side and user side. • "Energy Storage+" integrated innovation The exhibition will highlight combined applications of storage with photovoltaics and wind power, practical use cases in microgrids, industrial and commercial parks, and zero-carbon factories, while exploring the deeper integration of energy storage with digitalization and intelligent technologies. 2. Ecosystem Integration: Connecting Global Industry Resources EP Shanghai is more than a showcase; it is a global business platform. The 2026 edition is expected to welcome 85,000 professional visitors, including more than 9,000 overseas visitors, and bring them together with 2,200+ leading domestic and international exhibitors to explore new business opportunities. • Targeted matching with overseas buyers Drawing on four decades of international industry resources, EP Shanghai will invite power companies, project investors and EPC contractors from key new energy growth markets such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Through efficient on-site matchmaking, energy storage enterprises can expand their global footprint without leaving China. • Full industry-chain collaboration The show will bring together grid companies such as State Grid and China Southern Power Grid, China’s major power generation groups, as well as design institutes and project developers. Energy storage companies will have direct access to core procurement decision-makers and deeper integration into the wider power ecosystem. 3. Exchange of Ideas: Tracking Technology Pathways and Business Models During the exhibition, more than 30 high-level forums, product launches and technical seminars will be held. Around the energy storage sector, discussions will focus on: • Policy and markets Interpreting the role of energy storage under China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, and analyzing provincial storage subsidy policies and opportunities in electricity spot markets. • Technology and safety Exploring breakthroughs in long-duration energy storage, safety design for storage systems, and key issues in commercial and industrial energy storage. • Applications and case studies Sharing successful operating models for shared energy storage, independent energy storage stations, and integrated solar-storage-charging solutions. More Than Energy Storage: Five Zones to Present a Complete Power Industry Landscape While energy storage will be a major focus, EP Shanghai 2026 will also present the full ecosystem of the electric power industry through dedicated exhibition zones, including: • One-stop power transmission and distribution Featuring transformers, switchgear assemblies, wires and cables, and other essential grid infrastructure. • Energy digitalization Highlighting the application of cloud computing, big data, IoT, mobile internet, artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies in power dispatching, operation and maintenance, and electricity trading. • Power automation Presenting advanced technologies such as relay protection, automation control and intelligent inspection. • Intelligent manufacturing for power equipment Focusing on smart upgrades in the manufacturing of power equipment and the application of new materials. • New energy storage and hydrogen-power integration Showcasing the latest solutions for storage, hydrogen energy and coordinated multi-energy development. ![]() 40th Anniversary: Witnessing the Past and Shaping the Future From 1986 to 2026, EP Shanghai has witnessed China’s electric power equipment industry evolve from technology introduction to global export. As the exhibition enters its 40th anniversary year, EP Shanghai invites power industry professionals from around the world to gather in Shanghai from 3–5 December 2026 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. Together, the industry will explore the critical role of energy storage in new power systems and seize the opportunities emerging from the global energy transition.
