Exothermic welding, also known as thermite welding, is a simple, highly efficient, and high‑quality metal‑joining process. It requires no external power source and is the preferred method for connecting metallic conductors in grounding systems. Exothermic welding achieves a high‑quality weld by using the intense heat generated from an aluminothermic reaction. This reaction takes place within a high‑temperature‑resistant graphite mold; under normal operating conditions, a single mold can produce more than 70 welds. The exothermic reaction itself is completed in just a few seconds.
